Westlock County-Fire Restriction-UPDATE MAY 18

FIRE CONTROL ORDER: Continuing restriction order in effect for Westlock County Jurisdiction.

Fire Permits may be issued for open burning at the discretion of the fire guardian all requests will be evaluated on a case-by-case basis.

Note: Residents who live or travel in the forest fire protection area zone 44 must adhere to provincial ban and Refer to Alberta Fire Control Zone Map.

Banned: Exploding Targets & Tracer Rounds.

Prohibited: No Backcountry Wood Fires on Public Lands or Private Lands;

Prohibited: Fireworks on Public Land located within Westlock County jurisdiction;

DUE TO PUBLIC SAFETY AND DETRIMENTAL ACTIVITIES:

Target Shooting for recreational purposes, is prohibited on Public Land located within Westlock County Jurisdiction;

Allowed: Backyard Fire Pits

Must be minimum of three (3) meter clearance, measured from the nearest fire pit edge is maintained from buildings, property lines, or other combustible material and have a mesh screen with openings no larger than 12.5 mm and constructed of expanded metal (or equivalent non-combustible material), gas or propane stove barbeques.

Allowed: Burn Barrels

Shall be constructed of non- combustible material, shall be free of damage, shall be covered with a tight-fitting metal mesh screen with openings not more than 6mm in size, shall be located on a non-combustible material base, and shall be located at least 3 meters away from any combustibles; and (No person shall burn prohibited materials in a Burning Barrel andoruse a Burn Barrel within the hamlet)

Allowed: Portable propane fire pits, that are CSA approved or UL certified

Allowed: Professional Engineered Incinerators

Allowed: Registered campgrounds within designated fire rings.

Supervise and extinguish all fires during windy dry conditions. If you are burning you SHALL have water, and extinguishing equipment handy and ready. It is recommended that all burn permits that were previously issued be checked, to ensure that they are out and not cause a spring grass fire.

** No person shall drive an off-highway vehicle unless the off-highway vehicle is equipped with an exhaust muffler that complies with Current Traffic Safety Act Off Highway Vehicle Regulations. (Approved activities or devices will not prevent potential prosecution or litigation if the user or device starts a wildfire.)

Westlock County urges everyone to use extreme caution when working or driving in grassy areas, be mindful of hot exhaust and keep vehicles clean and free of debris as smoldering debris can fall off and start fires.
