Pickardville

One of the activities the Pickardville community has looked forward to for over 100 years is the Canada Day July 1 celebrations. They called it Pickardville Picnic years ago. Residents prepare for this special day. Yards are cared for, decorations put up, and floats for the parade. Years ago they also held baseball games, demolition derbies and horseshoe tournament, still being held today. A pancake breakfast, concession, kids games, steak BBQ supper, car and tractor show and evening fireworks. A fun filled day for the whole family.

Pickardville Skating Rink

The risks associated with ice skating ought to be taken seriously. The best thing you can do to stay safe is to be informed and cautious. Consider the following risks and safety tips.

Proper Equipment

Many of the orthopedic skating injuries that are commonly suffered can be prevented by simply wearing proper equipment; that may include padding, helmets, and--of course--quality skates.

Proper Fit

Skates that do not fit properly contribute to a high number of skating injuries; they may cause stress to bones, muscles, and ligaments, as well as imbalance.

Warm Up Thoroughly

Cold muscles and ligaments are more brittle and prone to tears and injury. Warming up can help to loosen your muscles, tendons, and ligaments and help to prevent tears.

Avoid Extreme Exposure

Wear adequately warm clothing--thick layers and a waterproof shell. And pay attention to changing weather. If you start to feel uncomfortable or chilled, it’s time to end your activity and return to warm shelter.

Skating involves various risks, dangers and hazards including but not limited to:

  • Concussion, head injury, laceration, stress or bone fracture, falls, ankle injury,
  • uneven or cracked surfaces;
  • variations in the terrain or surface including but not limited to ruts, crevasses, holes, rocks, gravel, tree roots and other natural objects;
  • ungroomed and unkept grounds, trails and areas;
  • wet and/or slippery ground and floors;
  • ice, snow, and slush in parking lots and on stairs, roads, sidewalks and pathways;
  • icy or slippery condition of snow in and around the skating rink;
  • loss of balance;
  • dim or low lighting;
  • changing weather conditions, including frequent thawing and freezing in the winter;
  • failure to act safely or within one’s own ability or to stay within designated areas;
  • negligent first aid;
  • negligence of other persons;
  • infectious disease contracted through viruses, bacteria, parasites, and fungi which may be transmitted through direct or indirect contact;
