Wildland/ Urban Interface Fire Training

Starting April 25, and continuing on April 26 and 27, 2025 Westlock County Protective Services along with mutual aid agencies will be conducting training and practical operations including scenarios and exercises in the Nestow area.
Wildland-Urban Interface (WUI) fire training is a structured approach to operations and involves situational awareness, hazard assessment, hazard control, decision-making, ongoing evaluation, while focusing on protecting structures, and ensuring firefighter safety that will better prepare first responders to respond to Urban Interface Wildfires.

What to Expect

In the afternoon of April 26 and on April 27 there will be emergency vehicles and first responders in the area walking around properties assessing for best tactical deployments of equipment and safe operations.

During this time residents and visitors in the area can expect to see LIVE SIMULATED firefighting actions, emergency personnel, emergency equipment, sprinkler deployment, and water spray.

Water streams will not be intentionally aimed directly at any structures. Sprinklers may be placed on roofs utilizing non- invasive methods, with Owner’s permission (no nails or screws will be used). During fire Engine operations water streams may be sprayed in and around yards, on surrounding wildland fuels, and along roadsides. With permission from property owners’ hoses may be deployed around structures to attack artificial fire (flagging tape) around the structures but water will not be sprayed on any structures.

Please be courteous while our first responders are in the area training.
Stay clear, and allow them space to work safely.
