2025 Municipal Election

Planning for the 2025 Municipal Election is underway. 

Interested in running as a candidate for Councillor?

 

Candidate eligibility

You are eligible to run in the 2025 municipal election if you are:

  • At least 18 years old
  • A Canadian citizen
  • A resident of Westlock County for the six consecutive months before nomination day and a resident of the division
  • Not otherwise ineligible or disqualified under the Local Authorities Election Act

 

How to be nominated as a candidate

Nominations can be filed starting January 2, 2025. If you wish to appear on the ballot for the 2025 municipal election, you must file the following with the Election Office:

Required

  • Nomination paper and candidate's acceptance form
  • Candidate financial information form

Optional

  • Candidate information and release
  • Official agent information and release

 

The Nomination period runs from January 1, 2025 through to September 22, 2025, with the deadline to submit papers being 12:00 p.m. on September 22, 2025.

Prior to Nomination Day, you must book an appointment with the Returning Officer to submit your completed nomination form. Westlock County accepts the nomination for Westlock County Council.

Nomination Day is Monday, September 22, 2025, beginning at 10:00 a.m. and running until 12:00 p.m. Applications will be accepted during this time at Westlock County Administration Office (10336 106 Street, Westlock).

 Notice of Intent

In accordance with the Local Authorities Election Act, candidates intending to run for the 2025 election for the position of Councillor must register their notice of intent with the Election Office before accepting campaign contribution or incurring campaign expenses.

To register, interested candidates may complete the Notice of Intent to Run form and submit it in person to the Returning Officer at the Westlock County Administration office.

A list of candidates who have submitted their Notice of Intent to Run to the Returning Officer will be posted here and continuously updated.

Please note: Candidates that register their Notice of Intent to Run must still submit their official nomination forms with required signatories which will be accepted beginning January 1, 2025 through to Nomination Day on September 22, 2025 at 12:00 noon. To submit your official nomination forms, please make an appointment with the Returning Officer at 780-307-0527. 

 

 

 Information for Candidates

Time Commitment

As a member of Council you will face demands of your time. In addition to regular meetings, you will be expected to attend special meetings, sit on committees and attend various public meetings and functions. To get an idea of how much time is involved consider speaking to a current Councillor.

 

Term of Office

County Councillors serve a four-year term. This term begins at the first meeting of Council after the election and continues until the first meeting of Council after the next election, unless their offices are vacated sooner. The positions of Reeve and Deputy Reeve are determined by all members of Council at the Organizational Meeting of Council held following the election.

 

Election Day

Election Day is Monday, October 20, 2025. Polls will open at 10:00 a.m. and close at 8:00 p.m. More details will be provided soon.
